Our Adoption Philosophy

At Hopewell Humane Society, we are committed to finding true forever homes for our cats and kittens — not temporary placements. To ensure the best match for both the cat and adopter, we carefully review all adoption applications.

Cats are not adopted as gifts, and we ask that everyone who will be living with the cat meets them during the adoption process.

How to Adopt

Please complete our online adoption application  for review.

As our shelter is volunteer-run, we appreciate your patience while applications are processed; background checks may take several days.

We also encourage you to visit and spend time with the cats you’re interested in during our open adoption hours.

Finding the Right Match

When you visit the shelter, our knowledgeable adoption counselors will take time to learn about your experience with cats, your household, and any pets you currently have. This helps us match you with a cat whose personality and needs are a great fit for your home and lifestyle.

Once your adoption application is approved, you’ll be able to bring home your new best friend.

To ensure thoughtful, lasting placements, we do not offer same-day adoptions and currently adopt within the Tri-Cities and Richmond (RVA) areas.

If you apply online, your application will be reviewed and a member of our team will contact you by email or phone. Once your online application is submitted, we’ll review it and reach out by email or phone. Approved adopters will complete a matching paper copy in person when finalizing the adoption.

Adoption Fees

Hopewell Humane Society charges a non-refundable adoption fee to help offset the cost of veterinary care and daily needs for the cats in our care.

Cats 6 years and younger: $120

Cats 7 years and older: $40

We love that for you! Check out our bonded pairs info to learn why some cats do best with a buddy (and when it’s required!).
